What are Wireless Meat Thermometers

We all know that a thermometer is an apparatus used to check and monitor temperature. And as above, when it comes to BBQ, we also use them to monitor the internal temperatures of meats whilst they are cooking. The trouble is, that as this cooking method can take any where between 6 and 24 hours, constantly going out to check temps can be downright inconvenient.

This is where a wireless options comes in. As the name suggests, a wireless meat thermometer designed to monitor the internal temperature of meat remotely, without needing a wire to connect the thermometer probe to the base unit.

It typically consists of a metal probe that is inserted into the meat, and a wireless transmitter or Bluetooth connection that sends real-time temperature data to a receiver or smartphone app.

Note: There are a number of different options available when it comes to a ‘wireless’ thermometer. Some have probes that are wired to a base unit that can be monitored wirelessly via a separate receiver or smartphone app (such as the Inkbird Thermometer that I use) whilst others are completely wireless in all components.

For this post, we are looking at options that contain wireless probes and well as monitoring capabilities.

What Should You Be Looking For?

When choosing a good wireless meat thermometer, there are several factors to consider to ensure you get a product that meets your needs. Here are some key considerations:

Range

Range refers to the distance you can be from the smoker and still be able to monitor the temperature registered by the probes. In general, Bluetooth thermometers typically have a shorter range (around 100-300 feet or 3 to 9 meters) than Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi thermometers then will allow you to monitor the temperature from much farther away. In fact, the limits here are usually based on the range of your Wi-Fi – which in some cases can go up to 1500 feet (45 meters).

Consider where you’ll be when monitoring the cooking and if you plan to move around your home, a Wi-Fi model may be more convenient.

Number of Probes

To be honest, I usually only use 2 probes at a time for the internal temp and one for the meat. That said, if you are cooking a lot of meat at once, then the number of probes available is definitely a consideration.

Some thermometers come with multiple probes, allowing you to monitor several pieces of meat at once or check both the meat and the ambient temperature inside the unit.

I will say here however that if you are looking at checking more than one piece of meat at once, then you may want to look at a unit with wired probes and wireless monitoring capabilities as these tend to come with more probes.

Accuracy

This is a big one of course however in my experience, as long as you know the ‘temps’ that your thermometer runs at, you can generally work with it all accordingly.

If absolute accuracy if critical for you however, check reviews for a thermometer that provides precise readings within a small margin of error (usually ±1-2°F).

From here, you can also run the ‘boiling water test’ as follows:

  • Boil a pot of water. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil.
  • Insert the thermometer probe. Place the probe into the boiling water, ensuring that it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom of the pot.
  • Check the temperature. Water boils at 212°F (100°C) at sea level. The thermometer should read this temperature within ±1-2°F (±0.5-1°C).

Now I know this is usually only done after you purchase it, however there are a number of YouTube videos you can look at that will test these for you as well.

Temperature Range

And while we are talking about temperature, then next factor here is range. In short, make sure the thermometer can handle the temperatures you need.

Some thermometers have a higher temperature limit, which is important for high-heat fast cooking, whilst others are better suited for low and slow smoking. In short, ensure the probe and wire are heat-resistant enough for use in high-temperature environments if you need and can monitor lower temps consistently for those overnight cooks.

Ease of Use

For me, if you are going to use a thermometer for BBQ, then you want it to be as easy to use as possible. For me, this includes:

  1. Quick and easy connection to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi
  2. Highly visibly temp display – afterall, you just want to be able to glance at it

That’s it, that to me is what you want. Of course there are other factors that you may want such as the ability to pre-set to match probes or meat type, graphs, alarms and even cooking guides. But in my humble opinion, you want it to be easy to use as well.

Battery Life

This is an area that is often overlooked however as low and slow cooking is not a speedy process, you don’t want the unit to die mid-cook. Some thermometers use replaceable batteries, while others are rechargeable via USB.

Consider how long your cooking sessions typically last and whether the thermometer’s battery life will cover the duration.

My Three Recommendations Broken Down

So, based on the information above and my own experience, I recommend the following options:

1. Vacuum Sealers Unlimited Smart Bluetooth Meat Thermometer

This first option offers great accuracy at a decent price. It’s probes are made of food-grade stainless steel and ceramic and are heat-resistant, non-melting, waterproof and easy to clean with a range of -4°F to 212°F (-20°C to 100°C).

Pros

  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for monitoring from up to 450 feet away.
  • Dual probes enable simultaneous temperature reading for different meats.
  • The app provides customizable settings and alerts for precise cooking.

Cons

  • Occasional Bluetooth disconnection at longer ranges may occur.
  • May not be suitable for those looking to cook at high temps.

Why have I chosen it?

This option provides full wireless capabilities up to 450ft and is particularly useful for those who want to check multiple cuts of meat simultaneously without hassle. The battery can handle 120 hours of continuous use and the probes will work in any number of cooking tools away from the smoker – such as air fryers and ovens too.

The app appears to be simple to use with all of the settings that the BBQ nerds will like – however if I am being honest, I do like a larger temp reading on the app but that’s just me. I have also seen a few reviews highlighting temp accuracy which is also a plus when it comes to BBQ.

All in all, this is a decent option for low and slower’s out there looking for a good cost effective wireless option capable of multiple uses.

2. Dewjom Wireless Meat Thermometer

Although it only comes with one probe, my next option offers a 500Ft connection to a iOS & Android Read App that is easy to use whilst still containing all of the pre-set and statistical capabilities that are so loved by many.

Pros

  • High accuracy with a quick response time (1-3sec).
  • Easy mobile app integration for remote monitoring.
  • Pre-programmed settings for various meats streamline cooking.

Cons

  • App has been reported to disconnect intermittently.

Why have I chosen it?

With an impressive range of up to 500 feet, the IPX65 waterproof base unit can manage internal temperatures of up to 212°F/100°C via high-quality food-grade steel probes.

The intuitive mobile app allows users to set alerts and track progress directly from their smartphones and offers pre-programmed functions for various meats, making it ideal for both seasoned and beginner pitmasters alike.

INSMART Wireless Smart Meat Thermometer

My final choice here offers a 330ft range and premium-quality IPX7 waterproof probes made of stainless steel and heat-resistant plastic. the app is easy to use and will reconnect automatically if connections are interrupted as well.

Pros

  • Temperature accuracy varies by only 0-0.5℃
  • Can handle connections of up to 100 FT if there are walls and obstacles in the way
  • Up to 100°C(212°F) internal temperature

Cons

  • App can be a little technical

Why have I chosen It?

With lightning fast temperature recognition and the ability to use in multiple environments, this is a great option for those looking to measure temperature in a number of cooking environments.

The probes are strong, easy to clean and constantly charge when attached to the base unit and contain multiple sensors within the rod for greater accuracy of temperature across the meat.

As with most of these product types, the connections do drop out however the app (with a nice big temperature reading) will actively reconnect – unusually within couple of seconds.
